I usually try to make the photographs speak for themselves and avoid special effects - I believe the viewer's imagination can provide better 'effects' than the software commonly provided.
I have recently been using two plug-ins, Mystical Lighting from Auto FX software and Art Studio Pro from Twisting Pixels. Along with some of the wonderful picture tubes people have created for Paint Shop Pro they make some effective pictures . . . . . . . . .
(You have to look closely at some - I don't believe in overstatement!)
